Hello there,
I am not even going to say it, or rather type it, but y’all know October starts on Thursday right? I swear September is over and for me, it was a blur. However, there were notable events in September – Fashion Week, Football Season, Emmy Awards, Papal Visit, and many television season premiers! Yep a ton of new shows premiered last week, and I caught four of my old favorites and maybe a new favorite. Today’s Monday Musing is about television and might be a bit controversial. Here goes!
Therefore, the television got some serious use as I watched in order – Rosewood, Empire, Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How To Get Away With Murder. I cannot say I was bowled over by any of the season premiers. Rosewood, a new favorite stars Morris Chestnut, he was handsome as ever, and the plot line was not horrible. Of course, the other shows are old favorites and were just okay for me.
However, by Friday, after watching everything, I noticed one consistent element of all 5 shows – a LGBT character or story line. So wait, this post is not for or against anyone’s lifestyle, I am not judging, I got my own ish. This post is about the television landscape in 2015 and your thoughts as television viewers. I thought how is it that every show, including Rosewood, that I watched had that particular story line. For me, I am on the fence. For example on How To Get Away With Murder, it was a twisty kinda thing with Annalise – was not expecting that turn of events. Hmmm, interesting, but explains why the lawyer lady was so emotional about the whole thing.
I like watching these crazy, unpredictable shows. However, I was thinking is this just a sign of the times or do the networks have a specific agenda? Did y’all notice? Does it change the tenor of the shows? Is it necessary? Do parents have any particular issues with LGBT characters or story lines? Perhaps the producers are attempting to have more diverse characters and stories. I do not know…
What did y’all watch? What are your thoughts? Don’t be skeered!!!

Children are exposed to all sorts of experiences. First, younger children should be in bed when these adult-themed shows air. Next, if there are teens who have questions about their sexuality, watching a television show will not change or sway their opinions. We live in a world that is so inter-connected that now sexuality has become an open-topic, but there are so many people who do not realize that humans, by nature, are sexual beings. Once the majority of the population understands this simple fact, then there will be other kinds of conversations that need addressing. One issue is that our generation has come to the conclusion that sexuality is not necessarily gendered, once we address this issue, maybe the conversations will become easier.

Hey Kim,
Excellent points! Yes, today’s kids see and hear it all, hopefully parents can have these conversations with confidence! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

Tv watching is like seeing what you previously had to pay for to see at the theaters. It’s amazing and sad at the same time.

Hey Robin, thank you for sharing your thoughts Television is very interesting right now and I’m still not sure if it is good or bad!

I’m glad you mentioned about the way shows are going now a days. I’m like you, I’m turned off with all the homosexuality on tv. When I was watching Empire I was like this is just way too much. I’m not against anyone’s lifestyle but dang, would they stop throwing it in our faces, sheesh! I think it’s a agenda that someone or people are trying to do and soon it’ll be nothing but gay everywhere we go.

Hi Louida, thanks for weighing in on the topic. One clarification, I’m not turned off by it or turned on by it, BUT it does seem like a concerted effort on the part of the networks. I’m wondering if they are hearing any feedback from viewers. I’ve seen lots of negative feedback in Facebook groups but I’m not sure it is filtering up to the networks. I have a few more shows debuting this week and we’ll see who’s on those shows too!

I’m pretty lame when it comes to television viewing…who’s up for watching Seinfeld reruns with me?! 🙂 I don’t want to speak for TV execs’ motives, but I think it’s important that television reflect all members of society. I think that TV still sensationalizes (or stereotypes) LGBT relationships, but at least they aren’t pretending that they don’t exist.
robi9832 says
Good point Merrie, there is definitely more representation of all groups and that’s a good thing! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts!

Since you asked…and then said “don’t be skeered”! Imma add my two cents to the conversation…
I rarely watch television neither movies.
For one thing, growing up I went to the movies with my parents and watched a certain scary movie. It took yyyyyeears (years) to get that image of this monster out of my head. So when I became an adult, I figured that I did not want expend energy trying to get out of my head images that I did not want there.
I must share this media group with you that addresses this issue. I have watched many of their documentaries and was blown away. The producers worked in Hollywood and are now Christians sharing valuable info.

Hey Robin,
That link seemed to be off when I did a copy paste to check it.
Try this one.

OR you can google Little Light Studios.
The first thing that I ever watched by them was The Replacement gods. That may still be viewable on vimeo, but if not it is worth it to purchase.
…sorry about that link.

Yes you are right! Most of the shows on prime time are reflective of the LGBT community and this too will pass, just like the “Superfly” era. Remember Pam Grier and Shaft? I am the first person to say “Every person for his or herself” when it comes to this subject and I understand equality for ALL, not just for some. But, I was not a fan of Empire last week for their portrayal and I did switch the channel. After all, we are all Free to be what we want to be and we enjoy the privilege of channel surfing. Kudos my Sista!

Well said Neti, that’s an interesting point of view, maybe it is the “it” trend right now in television. Yeah Empire didn’t get good until like the last 30 minutes!!!

I have to admit, I really don’t watch a lot of the shoes on t.v. though I was wondering what the show with Morris Chesnut was like. I’ll have to check it out one night. #BLMgirls

Hey Stacie, yep the Morris Chestnut show Rosewood, was not bad at all!
Antionette Blake says
We watched Rosewood and although I like Morris Chestnut, I do hope his story line gets better and it was weird after seeing “Janey because I could only think of her and Derwin from The Game. The premier of Empire was okay but it’s really upsetting to hubby with the male kissing scenes. I missed HTGAWM because I was watching something else so I don’t have a comment.
I do love watching Sundays on MeTV, I love Lucy, Laverne and Shirley and The Honeymooners, even though there aren’t any people of color…then I switch to Sanford and Son and The Jeffersons! But I am waiting for the Walking Dead, then everything will be alright in my world!

Yes Antionette, I can not wait for The Walking Dead! Fear The Walking Dead has been interesting too, seeing how the government and the military responded to the crisis. Explains a lot!

As a parent I don’t watch adult shows while my kids are in the room with me. I don’t want my kids to be exposed to cursing, sex scenes, and violence so I don’t watch adult shows while they can hear and/or see the TV. The only show that I keep up with Scandal. Because prime time is bath and storytime for this mama.
robi9832 says
Hi Sonya, Scandal is a fave too, but this last episode was lackluster IMO. I hope the season gets better!
