Hello Pretties,
I’m happy to share a special post today featuring new music from Mary J. Blige – The London Sessions. Mary J. Blige is of course an icon in the music industry with a career that spans 25 years.
This is not your Mary of 1994, but it is still Mary telling her story, her way. I will say right up front, I wanted to like this album. Mary recorded The London Sessions alongside some top names like wildly successful Rodney Jerkins and some up and comers like Disclosure and Emeli Sande. If I had to sum up this new album in one word, it would be different. The sound is still raw and unpolished but it is not Mary J. Blige of years past. I know the Mary J. Blige fans are cursing me now, I’m a fan too, so stay with me.
There are 12 tracks on the album and 2 tracks really stood out for me – Doubt and Not Loving You.
Doubt is one of those anthem tunes with lyrics like, “Can’t keep doubting myself anymore” , “No stopping me now”, and “I made it to the end”. It’s a great motivational song that invites us to celebrate ourselves. We all need a tune like this. I give it 4 crowns.
Not Loving You surprised me. Mary flipped the script on this one and admonished, “There’s only so much I can do if you’re not loving you”. Whoa Mary! No unrequited love here – get yourself together before you can love someone else. That’s a powerful message. That piano intro and Mary’s voice quivering in some places really gives this tune that authenticity that is so Mary. This is my favorite track, I give it 5 crowns!
Well, the rest of the tracks are the “different” part. There is a distinct house music vibe on most of the up tempo tracks such as Right Now and Nobody But You. Danceable tracks but with an almost, dare I say 80’s feel.
I give The London Sessions 4 crowns overall. You’re surprised I know but at the end of the day, it’s Mary J. Blige and you just can not deny the soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics.
