ASW Whiskey Exchange – Let’s Go

July 8, 2019 by robincharmagne 8 Comments

Hello pretties,

I feel like I am cheating on my bae, the Mojito. But when a sister/friend suggested a bourbon tasting, I was down for an adventure. Enter ASW Whiskey Exchange, nestled in historic West End featuring a Tasting Room on the premises.

Did You Know?

There are specific laws around making bourbon?

  • Must be made in the United States.
  • Must contain 51% corn.
  • Must be aged in new oak-charred barrels.
  • Must be distilled to no more than 160 proof and entered into the barrel at 125 proof.
  • Must be bottled at no less than 80 proof.
  • Must not contain any added flavoring, coloring or other additives.

*Source: Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits (27 CFR 5).

The Tasting

On a hot, sunny, afternoon, our adventure began. For $20 we received 5 tokens to try a taste or a slushy or both…LOL

We are ready to get our taste on!
Being a newbie, I started with two bourbons, both dark! I was told that purists forgo the ice, so I tried it both ways. Well both were too strong for me and honestly tasted like medicine.
But let’s talk about this cocktail. It was yummy, not too sweet and not so strong like the two bourbons. And this concoction was made with silver whiskey that looks and somewhat tastes like vodka and something else, but dang I can’t remember what was added. It was on point though! But It was quite good.
aswdistillery_slushy_robincharmagne
So between the dark bourbon, the light bourbon and the slushy, I’m choosing…the cocktail!
Of course there’s a Peachtree….
No idea what this contraption does, but I thought it looked unique!
I love the barrel room and guess what? You can rent the space for events. Definitely adding this spot to my list of event spaces.

Overall, the Exchange was so interesting and the staff was hella cool, knowledgeable, and patient with the newbie. There are tables set up to taste and chill. And for you pet lovers, ASW is pet friendly. I still don’t like bourbon straight. I have to add something to it and I do prefer it more like cocktail. If you are entertaining at home and serve bourbon, you need a whiskey glass and whiskey cubes.

The Verdict

While I’m not a huge drinker, I thought just like with food, expanding your palette is not a bad thing. If you in the Atlanta area and looking for an adult field trip, try bourbon tasting. I recommend ASW Exchange without reservation!

Do you drink bourbon?

graft – Sunday Brunch

January 14, 2019 by robincharmagne 4 Comments

Hello pretties,

A good Sunday afternoon includes brunch! So when your sorority sister, says come to brunch, you say I’m on the way. I had the pleasure of brunch at graft, right outside of Atlanta in Grayson, Georgia. Now this spot was quite a haul from my house, a one hour and five minute trek. And, needless to say, I worked up an appetite. As I drove up to this little house, my first impression was oh this is cute and unpretentious, this food is going to be good.

Easy parking in the rear of the house and it’s free. I later discovered this home is one of the oldest in Grayson. You sort of walk up on the porch adorned with rustic decor which leads to the entrance of the restaurant. A pleasant gentlemen seated us and even moved us closer to a window when we requested to change tables.

graft is a farm-to-table restaurant that partners with local farms to provide fresh ingredients. Of course we love that.

Our server suggested we start with the trio of deviled eggs with beet, house pickles and jalapeño jam. It was a little sweet, a little tangy, and crunchy and just the right portion for a starter.

For my brunch entree, I chose the breakfast burger which is a biscuit with a fried egg, carmelized onions, jam and a side of fries. I can’t believe I ate the whole thing, savory and full of flavor.

For desert, the server recommended the banana bread. The brown sugar butter was sweet but not overly sweet, a nice complement. It was so good, I took a piece home a late night snack with a good cup of coffee.

It is a rare occassion that everything you order on a menu is just scrumptious, but I savored every bite. We even got a chance to talk with the Chef/Owner about the menu and working with local farmers, she was clearly passionate about the food being prepared and presented at graft. It was well worth the drive and I highly recommend this restaurant for Sunday Brunch.

How far would you drive for a good meal?

Meatless Monday – Monday Musing

Meatless- Monday-robincharmagne
Hello pretties,
Meatless Monday? I know my thoughts too, no meat? My sorority chapter, Sigma Omega Omega, of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is encouraging Meatless Monday in support of a key national program – Health Promotion. We have all heard that a plant based diet is good for our overall health. But nonetheless, I don’t cook, or at least not very well, so this whole idea while good, is a bit scary for me. To ease into this meatless cooking thang, I picked 3 easy recipes courtesy of Cooking Light for an easy, but delicious Meatless Monday, take a peek…

GunShow – Let’s Go

November 17, 2016 by robincharmagne 6 Comments

gunshowatl-robincharmagne

Hello pretties,
Gunshow is a must try eatery in The A. A very unique dining experience like nothing else in the city. Opened by Kevin Gillespie of Top Chef fame, the restaurant is “inspired by Brazilian churrascaria-style dining and Chinese dim sum” so you already know you are in for a treat. The concept is each chef prepares a dish and brings it to your table. You pick the dish if you like and then another chef brings out his dish and you choose again. You will get to try about 10 dishes over the course of the dinner. The kitchen is up close and personal so you can watch each chef prepare their dishes. And, don’t worry about being thirsty, the bartender makes your drink right at the table – so very cool.

5 Things To Know About Gunshow

1 – There is no “may I take your order?” or “what will you have?” So, keep an open mind
2 – Make your choice quickly! If you see a dish you like, say yes, it might not come back around
3 – Don’t be concerned about insulting the chef! If you want to pass on a dish, that is perfectly okay
4 – Rub elbows with your neighbor, it is communal seating. My neighbor’s drink looked so inviting, he shared it with me – too much fun
5 – Perfect spot for small group outing – a girl’s night or a work meeting, lots of food to share among friends

I swear I would dine here once a week, totally worth it. My favorite dish was the braised lamb with confit sweet potato, endive, and celery root. The roasted garlic panisse, turnip, tahini, and kale was so pretty I did not want to eat it – but I did!! Okay so the signature dessert is banana pudding, but for me it was a miss. I like my banana pudding cold and thick. Hot, soupy banana pudding is not appetizing, sorry Chef Kevin. The restaurant is only open from 6-9, Tuesday to Saturday. If you want to try fancy food in a very casual environment, then this is the spot for you! Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Have you been to Gunshow or any good restaurants lately?

If We Were Having Coffee

October 21, 2016 by robincharmagne

coffee-chat

Hello pretties,
Let’s have a cup of coffee! This might be a regular series where we just chat it up, but for now, If We Were Having Coffee…

I would tell you I am binge watching Marvel’s Luke Cage on Netflix this weekend. I have heard sooo much about this show and being a sci-fi nerd, can’t wait to watch it!

I would tell you I am on the hunt for an oversized denim jacket. The longer style to accommodate junky sweaters or a hoodie. I don’t own one, can you believe it?

I would tell you I’m trying this pretty but super easy DIY from blogger babe Faithnista.

I would tell you I want to try meal delivery service to help me with this messy diet of mine – Real Meal Delivery or Peach Dish.

What would you tell me over coffee? Have a lovely weekend!

Divas And Desserts With Sutter Home

Hello pretties,
Diva friends are always so much fun to entertain and Sutter Home helped make it an even better night. On a typically hotlanta night perfect for sipping on Sutter Home Red Moscato and for making some sweet treats, three divas joined me to try a new wine.
divas-desserts-sutter-home

Before the girls arrived for our Divas and Desserts night, we setup the wine, accessories and dessert station. This is a fun summer setup and not terribly expensive. Summer fruits like blue berries, cherries, and strawberries are in season and on sale. In addition, priced just right, the Sutter Home Red Moscato is a good choice for summer entertaining.

The divas love a good sweet wine but not overly sweet and this Red Moscato fit the bill. It has a fresh and fruity taste with hints of cherries and berries. I chilled it just a bit because even at night, it was still balmy.

The dessert station was so simple – blue berries, cherries, and strawberries; sponge cake, vanilla ice cream, graham crackers, almonds, macadamia nuts, chocolate syrup and whip cream. Yummy!

fruit-ice-cream-sutter-home-red-moscato

With all these goodies, we made fruity treats to complement the Red Moscato.

dessert-making-sutter-home

The Divas were so creative and whipped up some tasty desserts and I’m sharing two of our faves that paired well the wine. Each recipe makes one serving:

Strawberry Graham

Ingredients:

1 graham cracker square
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
1 tablespoon of strawberries
A dollop of whip cream
A dash of almond shavings
Layer in a cute dish and enjoy!

Sponge Cake Berry Delight

Ingredients:
1 sponge cake
1 tablespoon crushed graham crackers
1 tablespoon of strawberries
1 tablespoon of blue berries
A dollop of whip cream
A dash of almond shavings
Layer in a cute dish and enjoy!

Add a glass of Red Moscato and you are done!

Who knew divas, desserts, and a good wine could be so much fun on a Thursday night. These divas are friends who became family, nothing like it! Sutter Home knows something about family; this business has been family-owned since 1948, winning 350 gold medals. That says a lot about the quality and consistency of their wines.

I think I have found a nice wine to complement any occasion. Sutter Home is the go-to wine for your summer gatherings. Pair with a favorite fruity dessert and checkout other options on the Sutter Home Pinterest page.

Have you tried other Sutter Home Moscato wines? If so, what’s your favorite?

Brunch – The Public House

May 10, 2016 by robincharmagne 6 Comments

brunch-hotel-indigo-robincharmagne

Hello pretties,
Brunch is one of my favorite outings on the weekends. It’s one of those meals that offers a wide range of choices, you can go sorta light with a breakfast or get a full belly with lunch. For brunch, I generally go for breakfast since it is still my first meal of the day. Recently I visited The Public House at Hotel Indigo, a funky boutique hotel nestled right in the middle of the burbs. The decor is modern with a hip vibe.

Coffee-Cider Bellini-Breakfast – first time having portobello mushrooms – yummy

Brunch at The Public House Brunch was so delicious and reasonably priced. The menu features Southern favorites with a modern twist. The service was also very good. A special treat was the Server’s history lesson of how the decor was inspired by Nellie Mae Rowe, a local artist who previously owned the property where the hotel is now sitting. Her artwork is featured in the hotel. I will definitely be brunching at The Public House again!
